Significant Renovation

Calacatta House

A substantial renovation of a 1980s stone house, centered on a new kitchen and family room that open to a walled garden and pool court.

Location
Vestavia Hills, Alabama
Year
2024
Duration
Sixteen months

The original house had excellent masonry but dark, compartmentalized rooms. We removed several interior walls, raised ceilings where structure allowed, and introduced a large book-matched Calacatta Viola island that becomes the center of the house. The kitchen opens through new steel-and-glass doors to a new limestone loggia and pool. All millwork is rift-sawn white oak with unlacquered brass.

Materials
  • Book-matched honed Calacatta Viola marble
  • Rift-sawn white oak cabinetry and paneling
  • La Cornue range in a plaster arch
  • Unlacquered brass pot filler and hardware
  • Limestone loggia and pool surround
