A new library and study wing added to an existing residence on the high ground of the Piedmont plateau, built in deep walnut and limestone with a working fireplace at its center.
The clients asked for a room that would feel scholarly without being somber — a place to read, write letters, and keep a personal collection. Floor-to-ceiling walnut shelving wraps three walls and returns around a limestone fireplace surround. Wide-plank rift-sawn white oak floors and an antique Persian rug ground the room. Tall casement windows on the east wall admit morning light filtered through existing live oaks.
