A new residence on a high, wooded lot in the hills north of Birmingham, built as a series of low stone volumes under a continuous slate roof.
The clients wanted a house that would feel rooted in the land rather than imposed on it. We kept the massing low and used the natural fall of the site to create a sequence of outdoor rooms — a motor court of crushed limestone, a walled entry garden, and a long south-facing terrace that steps down into the woods. Alabama limestone and live oak are the primary materials inside and out.
