The clients wanted a house that would feel rooted in the land rather than imposed on it. We kept the massing low and used the natural fall of the site to create a sequence of outdoor rooms — a motor court of crushed limestone, a walled entry garden, and a long south-facing terrace that steps down into the woods. Alabama limestone and live oak are the primary materials inside and out.

Materials
  • Alabama limestone, random ashlar
  • Charcoal slate roof
  • Rift-sawn white oak throughout
  • Hand-troweled lime plaster
  • Bronze and unlacquered brass details
